Nylon Magazine

Here's a relatively new fashion/life magazine that I've been reading since its inception.. well the guys one anyways. Yes, they have a Nylon for women and one for men but the content for the men isn't as up to speed as for the women (naturally). It's getting there I guess. I don't know.. some of the stuff is a bit TOO tragically hip for my taste but there is some good stuff for you "hipshits" out there. Excuse my french. There's an article up now about the creator of Bathing Ape clothes (in the mens) and photos of us amazing house. You can download or read the entire Nylon for women from the website but Nylon for men is only on stands although there is a limited Nylon for guys website. Link to Nylon Magazine

Musicovery

This French-based online radio site is all over the blogosphere. You pick a genre of music and a particular shade/mood of the genre and a musical map will appear playing songs that match it. It's a pretty site and a cool concept but the functionality can be improved upon as can the music selection. Check it out:Link to Musicovery

Whoops, the site is currently down because of all the visitors but it will be back up soon they say.

T-Shirt craze

I was just about to write a post about all these t-shirt sites that offer one-of-a-kind or novelty designs but someone beat me to it and did a fine job at that. He lists a bunch of the best design + t-shirts websites like Threadless.com and Protoculture.com. Check out You Look Like I Need A Drink blog here:Link

Photography of Erwin Olaf

Erwin Olaf's photography is dark and somber, and many of his projects edge well beyond the twisted, but I can't get enough. The colors, the lighting, the sets, the images bring together a unique aesthetic. There are some disturbing images so if you have a fear of clowns or if the sight of blood makes you uneasy, I suggest you stick to his tamer projects. Check out Erwin Olaf's photos here: Link

Spanish Castle Optical Illusion

This optical illusion is mesmerizing. Fools your eyes into thinking that there is color on a black & white photo. Enjoy the Spanish Castle Optical Illusion: Link

Japanese-style Illustration of Gez Fry at PingMag

Pretty cool Tokyo-based magazine about "Design and Making Things". One recent article is particularly interesting.. it's about Gez Fry (a European) who basically mastered the art of Japanese style illustration in 2 years! And with no drawing experience! Very impressive work. Read the article at Ping Mag

Secret Fun Spot

I remember reading old Boys' Life magazines and comic books in the 80's that had ads for X-Ray vision glasses and Sea Monkeys. I was always fascinated by those gag items but never did buy them for myself and never knew what they looked like. At the Secret Fun Spot website you can see all kinds of retro culture items from even way before my time. Lots of toys, ads, novelties, and other retro goodies. I love the fake Star Wars section.. soo bad. Link to:Secret Fun Spot

JacksonPollack.org

I don't know if I will ever fully appreciate or understand the work of Jackson Pollack. I get the frenzied action and involvement that is expressed in his paintings, and the controlled/uncontrolled strokes but was he a genius? Perhaps..but I'm not in a position to make that judgment. Anyways, now you can know what it is like to paint in Pollack's famous drip style albeit in a digital setting. Here's my go at it on the left. Go and create your own drip painting on Miltos Manetas website: JacksonPollack.org

Supper Club

This high concept "club" is part restaurant, part visual experience, part musical experience. DJ's, performers, artists, and even restaurant staff all take part in bringing guests a complete onslaught of all five senses. There are four of these artistic restaurants world wide: Amsterdam, Rome, San Francisco, and Istanbul, and you can also take the Supperclub cruise to Antwerp this year for a 10-day cruise. Art, music, food, drink, ambience all in one setting. Supper Club is a modern day revelry that would make Bacchus proud. For concept, menu, DJ listings, etc. go to: Supper Club

Bitty.com

The creators of Bitty.com came up with a simple concept of placing a browser within a browser. It is like picture-in-picture (pip) for your web browser. You can put the little bitty browser into blog or google page so you can browse while browsing. Check it out: Bitty.com

Flickr Photoset of USSR Posters

When I was in London last summer, the Tate Modern had an exhibit displaying propaganda posters from the early days of the Soviet Union alongside their Frida Kahlo exhibit. I had always been drawn to the distinct style of the early propaganda campaign of the Soviet revolution and that was the first time I saw originals from that time period. This Flickr photoset displays not only government propaganda but also advertisements from Lenin's time all the way up to the days of Gorbachev. I'm sure for someone who had lived in the USSR during that time would think these posters mundane or ordinary, but being the history buff that I am, am so fascinated by the history that it reflects and the artwork that makes it unique. View bpx's (Ben Perry from Berlin) photoset here: USSR Posters

Art: VVORK

VVORK site posts various experimental art projects from around the world and links to their sites. From the quirky to the downright ftw? When looking at these projects, Warhol comes to mind: "Art is what you can get away with." Link to VVORK

Photography of Federica Palmarin

"Only Jesus Saves" and plenty more interesting photos by Federica Palmarin. Some make me feel very uneasy and disturbed but are compelling nonetheless. The photo on the splash page cracks me up. Check the page here: Federica Palmarin
